The YouTube trailer of Afro Samurai is below.
I was flipping through the channels and saw Afro Samurai. At first I thought “Is that just some “black” version of The Last Samurai?” Don’t ask, it was late and yes I was tired. Anyway, so I was going to keep going through the channels but glanced over at the description on the top left of the screen and I saw the … name ‘Samuel L. Jackson’ and then the year, 2007. And was like “What?!” So that was enough to get me to click on to see what it was all about and must say the brief description too had it’s hand in it. Saying something about a boy seeking to avenge his father’s death or something. But if it weren’t for me seeing Samuel’s name I wouldn’t have clicked on it to watch. I’m not a big fan of that animation type stuff and I’m not really a big fan of Samuel. But he’s alright enough to watch in movies and this is the first time I’ve heard him play the voice of some character in any animation film whether it’s japanimae style or pixar style stuff. Anyway, like I said it was late so I just recorded it on the DVR thing.
About a week later or so, I finally got around to watching the whole thing; well not the entire thing. The DVR stopped recording it when I think it had like 5 or 10 minutes left. So I’m going to have to by it or something to watch the rest since I don’t know when it will come back on tv again. I am impressed with it enough to want to buy it. Of course, it’s for the mature/adult crowd. It’s vivid and bloody, but the storyline is well illustrated in my view. I didn’t care for some of the voice actors for some of the characters, though. What I mean is, some of the voices didn’t seem to “fit” the characters. But whatever. It was still a good film and worth the watch. There was a scene in there that actually reminded me of a game my father was so into some several years ago called Prince of Persia. I liked playing the game but not as much as my pops. In Prince of Persia he’d come to point where he had to fight himself. And well same in Afro Samurai and man that scene was pretty kewl. It might be a common thing in that type of animation but like I said I don’t watch stuff like that largely because it looks like I’m looking at a bunch of “scribbles” or ’sketchy’ on the screen. Like it’s got added sketchiness that doesn’t need to be there and causes it to look “dirty”. It’s not a clean canvas or something and it tends to bother me. But I suppose that’s just the way that style of art is: SKETCHY. I don’t mind sketchy on paper but sketchy animated — naawww.
